How to watermark a PDF

What a watermark is for
It tells a reader what they are holding: that this is a draft, that it is not for circulation, that it belongs to a particular matter. It works because people read it, not because it stops anything. Tiled marks are harder to crop out of a screenshot, which is the only real difference between the two layouts.
What it is not
A watermark is not protection. Anyone determined can remove it, and the tools to do so are easy to find. If the document genuinely must not be copied or altered, a watermark is a label on the problem rather than a solution to it. Treat it as a notice, not a lock.

Can a PDF watermark be removed?
Yes, by anyone who wants to. It is drawn onto the page, so it can be edited off. A watermark is a notice to an honest reader, not a security measure.
What opacity should I use?
Around twenty percent. Low enough that the text underneath stays readable, high enough that nobody misses it. The slider goes from five to sixty.
Can I use an image or a logo as the watermark?
This tool does text. For a logo, generate the document through the API with the image positioned in your own CSS, which also gives you control over where it sits on every page.
Is the document uploaded?
No. The watermark is drawn in your browser, which is the point: documents that need marking as confidential are the last ones you should be uploading to a stranger.
Will it cover the text on each page?
It is drawn over the content at low opacity, so the page stays readable. Use the tiled layout for a stronger mark, or drop the opacity if the document is dense.
