How to convert a PDF to Excel

  1. 1Drop in a PDF, or choose one from your computer. Statements, invoices and reports all work.
  2. 2Wait a few seconds while the tables are read. Most documents come back in under five.
  3. 3Check the preview against the original, especially the number columns.
  4. 4Download the rows as .xlsx for Excel, or .csv for anything else.

What it handles

Bank and credit card statements, including tables that run across several pages. Invoices, purchase orders and remittance advice. Reports and financial statements with more than one table on a page. Values are kept exactly as printed, so currency symbols, minus signs and parentheses survive the trip into your spreadsheet.

Scanned documents

Pages that are photographs of paper work less reliably than digital PDFs. If a column comes back empty or shifted, check it against the original before using the numbers. The preview exists so you catch that before downloading.

PDF to Excel: common questions

Is PDF to Excel free?

Your first document is free and needs no account. After that, create an account and each document costs one credit. Credits start at $5 for 100, they never expire, and there is no subscription.

Does my PDF get uploaded to a server?

This is the one tool that needs a server, because the tables are read by a model. The file travels over HTTPS, is held in memory for the length of the request, and is never written to disk. Only the extracted rows are kept, so you can pick the result back up after signing up, and those rows are deleted after 30 days.

Does it keep a table that runs across several pages together?

Yes. A table that continues onto the next page is merged into one table with a single header row, rather than being split into one table per page.

Will it work on a scanned PDF?

Usually, but less reliably than a digital PDF. Scans of good quality normally come back correct. Faxed or photographed pages can drop a column or shift a value, so check the preview before you trust the numbers.

Can I convert a bank statement to Excel with it?

Yes, that is the most common use. Transaction tables keep their dates, descriptions and amounts in the printed order, and blank cells stay blank so the rows line up.

Is there a file size limit?

The free tool takes PDFs up to 12MB. Larger documents work through the API.

Need this inside your own app?

The same engine runs behind the html4pdf API: post HTML, a URL or a JSON template and get a PDF back in the same request. Nothing is stored on our side. New accounts get 10 free credits.
