PDF metadata.
See it, change it, strip it.

Every PDF carries properties most people never look at: who made it, on what, and when. Read them here, change them, or clear them before the file leaves your hands.

How to check and clear PDF metadata

  1. 1Drop in the PDF you want to inspect.
  2. 2Read what it currently says about itself, including the dates and page count.
  3. 3Edit any field, or press Strip everything to clear them all.
  4. 4Download the file with the properties you want on it.

What a PDF knows about you

The author field is often your account name, filled in automatically. The creator and producer fields name the software and sometimes its exact version. The timestamps say when the document was made and last touched. None of this is visible on the page, all of it travels with the file, and most people sending a CV or a tender response have no idea it is there.

What stripping does not reach

This clears the document properties and resets the dates. It does not change anything printed on the page, and it does not touch data embedded inside images or XMP blocks that some producers write separately. For a document that genuinely must be clean, check the result in a reader before you send it.

PDF metadata: common questions

How do I remove the author from a PDF?

Drop the file in, clear the author field, and download. Or press Strip everything to clear the author, title, subject, keywords, software names and timestamps in one go.

What metadata does a PDF contain?

Title, author, subject, keywords, the software that created it, the software that produced it, and the creation and modification dates. There can also be XMP metadata, which some programs write in addition to these fields.

Is my document uploaded to read its metadata?

No. It is read and rewritten in your browser, which is rather the point of a privacy tool.

Why does my PDF say it was made by something I did not use?

The producer field names whatever library finally wrote the file, which is often different from the program you were working in. A document exported from a word processor is frequently produced by a PDF library you have never heard of.

Does stripping metadata change how the document looks?

No. Nothing on the page changes. Only the properties attached to the file do.
